Part 2 of guide on supervising people smarter than you

Where it lands

Lands in lead 1:1s and sprint planning when senior ICs or coding agents outpace you technically. Human still sets priorities, acceptance criteria, escalation paths, and final ship/no-ship on risky changes.

Business@poteto

Builder lists audience

Use in annual strategy or pricing review: if coding and content get commoditized, what assets still compound? Human approves bet mix across product, distribution, community, and capital, not agent forecasts about obsolescence.

Even frozen models would drive a decade of workflow change via better

Use in quarterly planning, not sprint standup: prioritize integration, training, and process redesign over model-chasing. Daily effect is to keep automating inbox drafts, ticket summaries, and doc updates with current tools while a human approves customer-facing sends, billing changes, and complian…

Repeated forward-deployed fixes should graduate into the product so the next customer

Lands in support and implementation backlog review: if the same customer workaround keeps recurring, productize it or encode it as a default agent skill. Stops endless one-off tickets and hours burn. A human still approves what gets generalized vs stays bespoke.

Business@hnshah

Critiques an automation report for assuming jobs split cleanly into tasks and

Lands before you automate invoicing, triage, or onboarding: check whether your work is truly decomposable or needs judgment across steps. Bad assumptions inflate ROI and create rework tickets. A human still maps real workflows, sets guardrails, and decides what stays manual.

Business@danshipper

Warns founders to read investor documents before signing

Block signature on SAFEs, notes, side letters, and vendor MSAs until a human reads redlines. Use a pre-sign checklist: liquidation prefs, pro-rata, board seats, IP assignment. You approve every term, not an LLM.

Finance@julianweisser

Attributes viral reach to a relatable

When escalating a customer issue, renewal risk, or internal incident, lead with normal language and credible context, not credential theater. Drafts can be agent-assisted; you approve tone, names redacted, and whether it leaves the thread.

Marketing@gabriel1

Asks for concrete

Borrow the discipline for vendor and agent reviews: require spelled-out failure modes (data leak, wrong invoice, bad ticket closure), not vague 'AI risk.' You still set acceptance thresholds and who can halt automation.

Policy@GaryMarcus

Compares pandemic spend to arguing for large annual AI alignment investment

Macro budget politics, not your standup. Locally, translate to a line item: reliability testing, access controls, and human review for agents on inbox, hours, and invoices, finance approves the spend level.

Policy@mattshumer_

Recommends a one-hour Stanford lecture on negotiation

Use before renewals, vendor quotes, lease talks, and late-payment follow-ups. Draft terms and counteroffers in a doc, then you approve walk-away points, concessions, and final signatures, no agent should commit on your behalf.
